On behalf of the Merrill Foto News and the Merrill Community, a heartfelt Thank You to the men and women of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.

Patrol Deputies are responsible for patrolling all portions of Lincoln County. Dispatch provides services to: LISO, Merrill PD, Tomahawk PD on overnights and weekends and handles all 911 calls county-wide. Additional agencies dispatched include: Corning, Merrill, Pine River, Russell and Tomahawk fire departments; Merrill EMS, Tomahawk EMS, Corning First Responders, Pine River First Responders and Russell First Responders. In 2017 the dispatch center handled 22,053 calls for service.
In order to reach the entire county through ever-changing weather conditions, the Sheriff’s Office uses sedans as well as four wheel drive SUV’s for patrol work. Each patrol unit is equipped with mobile data computer that provides call information, and digital mapping of the entire county. The Rec. Deputy is equipped with a four-wheel drive pickup truck, an ATV, a rescue sled, a boat and diving equipment. The SRT Team utilizes a mobile command trailer and four-wheel drive pickup truck to tow it along with a Bear Cat rescue vehicle which was newly obtained thanks to a grant from the Bierman Family Foundation.
We endeavor to recruit new employees who have the best training and experience. Members of the Sheriff’s Office, through their job performance or interest in a field, may go on for additional training or assignments including DARE Officers, SRT Members, Investigators, Drug Unit, EVOC Instructor, traffic safety specialist, field training officers, firearms instructor, honor guard, or other unit specific training.
The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office employees strive to serve the community through effective and professional law enforcement. We recognize that we must always have the public’s trust in order to truly be effective. Historically we have been able to use our proactive approach to reduce fatal crashes by using a variety of enforcement tools including removing impaired and aggressive drivers from the roadway. Our drug unit continues to diligently and aggressively address the manufacture and sales of illegal drugs in Lincoln County. With strong leadership and a determined group of employees this agency continues to provide effective response and handling of incidents through the county as we work with fellow emergency service agencies and the public to provide a safe and secure environment to live, work and play.

The week of October 22, The Merrill Foto News published a special section as a Tribute to Public Safety: thanking all of the men and women of our local public safety agencies for their ongoing dedication to safeguarding the health and safety of all Lincoln County residents. On behalf of the Merrill Foto News and the Merrill Community, a heartfelt Thank You to the men and women of the Town of Pine River Volunteer Fire Department and First Responders.

The Pine River Volunteer Fire Department & First Responders cover the Town of Pine River, with automatic mutual aid to the Marathon County Town of Hewitt for vehicle crashes.
Department equipment includes one FWD Seagrave Pumper, two tankers, a brush truck and six wheeled off road rescue vehicle, heavy duty rescue truck, and utility truck for manpower transport and fill site operations.
Each member of the department is certified Firefighter 1, while many have gone on to become Firefighter II certified. The department utilizes its own in house training program and has three certified instructors on the roster. They also use the NTC Merrill Campus to keep members up to date on the latest training advances in the fire service and work with the towns of Texas and Hewitt quarterly.
The Pine River Fire Department enjoys a strong commitment from both its members and town residents to keep the department well–staffed and adequately equipped. The annual Pig Roast fundraiser was just held in September and this year the preliminary numbers were record breaking. This is thanks to the countless hours the fundraising committee devotes to the project. Over the past year, two department members passed away. This has made our department much closer as we grieved together and we are appreciative of those who have supported us during after those two tragic deaths.

ONSTAR phoned a crash into the Sheriff’s Office at 11:48 a.m. Monday morning after the vehicle left the roadway at Iverson Road and Crass Road. The driver, a 34-year-old Tomahawk woman, was traveling too fast when she approached the corner causing her vehicle to leave the road. No injuries were reported.

Several fires were reported to the Sheriff’s Office this week. On Monday a UTV had started on fire and was melting the siding of a nearby garage in the Town of Harrison. On Thursday a riding lawn mower caught fire at a residence in Pine River. On Friday a pile of vegetation rekindled and began burning into a wooded area in the Town of Bradley.

Two Minnesota men were arrested Wednesday evening on drug charges after a traffic stop in the Town of Merrill. The deputy noted the smell of marijuana and requested the Merrill PD Eros to the scene. Eros alerted to the odor of illegal drugs in the vehicle and a search found marijuana and drug paraphernalia. The driver, a 25-year-old South Saint Paul man, was charged with a felony offense of possession of marijuana as a repeat offender and a misdemeanor charge of possession of drug paraphernalia. The passenger, a 28-year-old Lakeville, MN, man was arrested on misdemeanor charges of possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

A 54-year-old Merrill man was arrested and a juvenile will be referred to the DNR after a poaching incident was investigated Thursday evening in the Town of Harding. Deputies were sent to a report of a deer being shot in a field off of West End Drive. Deputies spoke with residents of the neighborhood to let them know of the incident. A 54-year-old man saw a UTV matching the description and followed the suspect who was a 14-year-old boy. Deputies believe the 54-year-old struck the UTV causing it to crash. No one was injured. The 54-year-old was arrested for first degree recklessly endangering safety and obstructing an officer. The teenager admitted to the poaching incident and that matter was turned over to the DNR.

The deputy could smell and see marijuana in the vehicle. He was taken into custody on the felony fourth offense OWI charge.

The number of deer crashes remains high with 16 being reported this past week. On Monday evening a bear was found struck and killed on County Rd. A west of US Hwy. 51. On Saturday evening a Tomahawk woman struck a bear on County Rd. D near Shorewood Road, that animal ran off after the crash.
